Crafting our tables

Every Pelissier card table is made by hand in England. Due to increased demand, in January 2020 we moved our operations to Yorkshire where our skilled carpenters are able to assemble tables in a wider range of wood finishes. They complete the assembly of the tables using our special high-quality components and carefully-selected wool-rich baize. We are sure you will be delighted with the table you receive.

We source our wood from Northern France, choosing carefully prepared beech wood from sustainable forests near Compiegne. The wood for the legs and frames of our tables is sanded to a smooth finish and can then be sprayed with a specially-prepared wood stain to give it a mahogany or other wood appearance. Or the natural beech can be left, unstained, to give a lighter, more modern feel. The wood is then varnished to give it a soft satin sheen. The result is a polished-wood appearance that still reveals the natural grains in the wood.

Most of our tables are designed to fold down when not in use. To accomplish this we fit the special hinges designed by M. Pelissier and made for us in one of France’s most modern precision metal factories. This three-part hinge provides a stable and robust fitting yet is easy to operate. The hinge was patented by M. Pelissier and remains, today, the most admired hinging system.

Take a look at our video to see how quickly you can set up your table.

The playing surface is mounted on a board of MDF. This material is the best for maintaining its flatness and won’t warp or bend like laminated or natural wood. We choose a special type of MDF that has been treated to withstand moisture. This board is then covered with wool-rich baize which is available in a range of different colours.

Each table is inspected by our carpenters before being packed in a carefully-designed transit box for courier delivery to you.

 Our heritage

Pelissier folding card tables have been made for more than 60 years. The original Pelissier et Cie was established in 1955 and Pelissier developed and patented the three-part hinge which makes the tables so special.

Until 2015 tables were made in France at a small factory and were supplied to bridge clubs throughout Europe. In 2015 the French company sold the patents, machinery and brand to us and we now produce the tables in Yorkshire. A new company, Pelissier UK Ltd, was formed to develop the business. Our aim was to produce a wider range of tables in different finishes more suitable to complement modern-day homes

Major improvements were made to the manufacturing process and new models introduced. These improvements included using a new type of woodstain produced by Morrells who have a Royal Warrant, and adapting the fixings for the three-part Pelissier hinge so that it can be tension-adjusted after manufacture. The hinges are made from our own moulds in one of Europe’s leading metal factories supplying major automotive manufacturers.

We also introduced new colours of wool rich baize and lighter wood finishes to complement more modern homes.

Special new models incorporating chessboards as well as fixed leg tables have been introduced.

Worldwide customers.

Pelissier tables are now sold throughout the world both to individuals and to clubs and hotels. An Australian buyer recently emailed us

'I am happy to advise that your three card tables arrived on the promised date, and they were extremely well wrapped against any damage. The club members saw the tables for the first time last night and are amazed at the quality.'

A bridge club in Belfast wrote:

'We are having no problem with the bridge table we ordered. It is very well made. We had our meeting and have decided to purchase 12 tables.  '  They subsequently ordered a further quantity for another club.

A Greek shipping line ordered 35 of our Premier tables for one of their cruise ships.

Our French distributor has supplied many of the leading bridge clubs in France with Club tables while several of the top Golf and country clubs in England now have our tables.

Andrew Robson, The Times Bridge Correspondent, has chosen Pelissier tables to offer through his bridge schools.

We also work closely with interior designers to supply tables in different wood and baize finishes to match the décor of the club or residence..
